LET’S KICK THE WASTE

LET’S KICK THE WASTE

Working hard to keep shoes and products out of landfills by extending their life and designing with circular principles in mind.

We believe that circular design principles pave the way forward in a world grappling with escalating environmental challenges, especially those related to post-consumer waste. According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. the equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is landfilled or incinerated every second. The need for change is pressing, and we are rising to the challenge. Our role as a global fashion company transcends crafting design that our customers love; it involves championing innovation through circularity and product longevity.

At Steve Madden, we believe in playing an active role in reducing post-consumer waste. Our commitment goes beyond creating enduring fashion. We are taking strides towards contributing to a circular economy, which requires designing our products and systems with an intention to recover and repurpose materials, instead of letting them go to waste.

The journey towards circularity in the footwear industry has unique hurdles. Most shoes are designed for durability and rely heavily on strong adhesives, making it difficult to disassemble shoe components for sorting and shredding. Furthermore, there can be upwards of 20 components in a single shoe, which makes it especially challenging to separate shoe materials for reintroduction into suitable recycling streams.

As we chart our course towards our circularity goals, our focus sharpens on two crucial areas. First, we aim to identify and collaborate with circularity partners offering innovative solutions to reclaim and recycle footwear as it is produced today. Second, we are proactively exploring novel ways to design and manufacture footwear with circularity at the forefront. In our circularity journey, we strive to strike a fine balance, combining the urgency of investing in scalable solutions with the audacity to pioneer innovative initiatives that reimagine the fundamentals of product design.

OUR 2025 TARGETS:

  • Establish multiple channels to recycle, resell, or repair pre-loved shoes.
  • Introduce a range of innovative products designed with circularity in mind.

PROGRESS:

  • Expanded our knowledge to work towards multiple channels to work towards recycle, resell and repair pre-loved shoes.
  • In 2024, we reconditioned 5074 unsold damaged pairs together with our reconditioning partner in Europe.
  • In 2023, 9214 kg of footwear samples where recycled through our recycling partner in Europe. In 2024 we increased this amount and recycled 10.263 kg.
  • In 2024, we collaborated with a charity partner and donated damaged shoes and bags. All donated products had minor imperfections, still looking good enough for an enduring life. Together with this charity we gave these products a new adventure.

In our commitment to delivering high-quality products to our valued customers, Steve Madden Europe introduced its updated Supplier Manual in 2024, recognizing the crucial role our suppliers, factories, and partners play in maintaining our overall standards. By implementing updates with our partners, we strive to enhance our production processes and set higher benchmarks to drive continuous improvement. This manual includes chemical standards, physical standards, and quality controls to uphold the highest standards. Steve Madden Europe takes all regulatory compliance obligations seriously. Our compliance team establishes and enforces restricted substance lists and physical performance protocols in collaboration with our third-party laboratories to ensure proper chemical and physical management.
